A reusable prompt structure

Learn a brief you can improve.

Better instructions describe the purpose and give you a basis for judging the response.

A reusable prompt structure
  1. Purpose

What should the result help someone do?

  2. Context

Which facts and examples should it use?

  3. Format

What shape and level of detail will be useful?

  4. Review

What needs checking, changing or clarifying?

Ask the tool to identify gaps, then decide which information or judgement is needed.

01 / AI prompt coaching

A prompt is a brief.

An AI prompt works like a brief. The tool needs to understand the task, audience, facts and desired result. Explaining those clearly gives it a better starting point and makes the answer easier for you to assess.

Coaching helps you describe the task in ordinary language and recognise which context matters. We work with useful examples from your business, with confidential information removed or handled only under an agreed arrangement.

Learn a method you can reuse.

We can practise supplying source material, setting boundaries and specifying the shape of an answer. You learn to ask for missing information, challenge unsupported statements and revise a request when the first result misses the point.

  • Purpose: what should this piece of work help someone do?
  • Context: what verified information does the tool need?
  • Boundaries: what must it avoid assuming or deciding?
  • Review: what will a person check before using the result?

Work on the judgement as well as the wording.

A polished paragraph can contain an invented fact. A confident recommendation can ignore an important constraint. We look at examples of those failures and practise checking sources, spotting gaps and deciding when to stop using AI for a task.

The aim is a method you can adapt to everyday work. You learn which context to supply, how to question the answer and when to ask a person instead. A few prompts you understand well are easier to keep useful as your work changes.

Leave with a small, usable toolkit.

The session or project can leave you with tested prompt templates, review notes and examples of a useful answer. We choose the tasks together so the material is relevant and manageable.

Bring the tool you use, a repeated task and an example of the result you need. We can work through its current features and identify whether a different account or subscription would add something useful.

For example

A better brief for a reply

Ask for a draft response using the customer's anonymised question, your approved service facts and a specified tone. Instruct the tool to list missing facts instead of filling them in. You check and send the final reply yourself.

Illustrative example.

Before we begin

Your questions.

Is this suitable for a complete beginner?

Yes. We can begin with the basics and practise at a comfortable pace. The work is shaped around the tasks you want to understand, rather than technical vocabulary.

Can a colleague join the coaching?

We can discuss who needs to take part and agree a suitable format. Group size, preparation and materials affect the scope and cost.
